After School Program - K-5

Extended Care

Schoolhouse believes the growth and development of students does not end at dismissal. The Extended Care Program provides a rich and thoughtful environment that recognizes both the need to continue to nurture children’s curiosity while also giving them a place to unwind after a day at school. The Extended Care teachers also teach during the school day to ensure continuity for the students, as they already have established relationships with them. Extended Care is open to all students, K-8, at $12.25/hour. Morning care starts at 8:00 a.m. until school begins. After care is available from dismissal until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The students have opportunities for mixed age group activities, both inside and outdoors. On Thursdays, the extended care programs goes to Mountain Lake Park, and then the Richmond Library. During extended care, the students are provided with a light snack, and have a mix of open play or structured project options.

Enrichment Classes

Enrichment classes are another component of the Extended Care Program. These classes offer a selection of opportunities that reflect Schoolhouse's belief that children learn best by doing hands-on projects that spark their creativity and curiosity. Typically, there are three 8-10 week sessions in a school year with classes that are one to one and a half hours long. Classes vary from session to session. Examples of programs include how to play a ukelele, yoga, hip-hop dancing, learn about animals, sewing, lego robotics, and create your own board game. The programs are taught by Schoolhouse teachers, established external programs, and Schoolhouse parents. Costs vary depending on the type of class.

*New this year-Math Circle has joined the Schoolhouse team. Math Circle promotes positive attitudes towards math and learning through engaging, hands-on puzzles and games that involve both creativity and critical thinking. More details can be found here.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Jina Kim, Director of Operations and Outreach (jina.kim@sfschoolhouse.org).
