Who We Are

San Francisco Schoolhouse is a non-profit, independent K-8 school located in the central area of the city, near Hayes Valley. Our intentionally small size, experienced and passionate teachers, experiential curriculum, and active parent participation provide a unique opportunity for families seeking a community-minded progressive education that challenges and supports their child.

  • K-8 school, currently serving 100 students in grades K-8. Enrolling grades K-8 for the 2023-2024 school year.

  • Established in 2011 as a non-sectarian, non-profit, independent school; governed by a Board of Trustees

  • Located at 735 Fell Street, in the heart of the city near Hayes Valley, we enjoy a beautiful 100+ year old school building filled with natural light and airy spaces, plus a play yard and garden classroom

  • Multi-age groups team taught by 2-3 teachers: kindergarten + first grade, second + third grade, fourth + fifth grade, sixth + seventh + eighth grade

  • Small by design, we enroll approximately 12 students per grade in grades K-5, and 18 students per grade in grades 6-8. Student-to-teacher ratio is 12-to-1 or better.

  • Project-based, hands-on curriculum personalized to each child; experiential education throughout the city; integrated music, theater and creative arts

  • School hours from 9am-2pm for Kindergarten; 9am-3pm for grades 1-5; 8:30-3:30pm for grades 6-8; all students dismissed at 2pm on Wednesday for faculty meetings

  • Before care and after care available from 8am-6pm, Monday-Friday, $12.50/hour

  • Extended day enrichment classes available for an additional fee

  • Family participation to foster school-wide community

  • Memberships include National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Bay Area Directors of Admission (BADA), California Independent Schools Business Officers Association (Cal-ISBOA)

  • 15 teachers

  • Tuition for 2023-2024: $19,784
